June 4th 1864.

Special Report of Piracy

A seaman belonging to a boat named Kum Yee Lee when sailing near Macao in passage from Kitch-Chek to Hong Kong, on the 27th ultimo about 8 A.M., his boat was attacked by two large pirate boats armed with cannon who fired about 10 shots (which was returned). One of our men was killed and five of the pirates were killed. The pirates then boarded and put all the crew (18 men) under hatches, then sailed the boat close to shore to a place called Sam Chow. Informant escaped on the 4th instant by swimming on shore.

The cargo consisted of 700 piculs of rattans, wood, and betel nuts valued at $4,000. The boat was armed with 2 cannon, 3 muskets, and 4 pistols.

Informant can identify both boats and some of the pirates.
